What do I need to do to become eligible?


• Non- Minor dependents must sign a mutual agreement within 6 months of turning 18 to remain in foster care, reside in eligible placement, and agree to work with social worker to meet goals of the Transitional Living Plan.

What are the benefits of AB-12?



• It promotes permanency for foster youth.

 

• It enables youth to maintain a safety net of support while experiencing independence in a secure supervised living environment.


• It will help youth better prepare for successful transition into adulthood.

What is AB-12?

 

AB-12 is extended foster care for foster children who are transitioning into adulthood. AB-12 was enacted into legislation in 2011 to decrease homelessness with young adults. AB-12 is a program designed to increase education, employment, and help build a safety net for children who are transitioning out of the foster care system.

What if I am pregnant or I already have a baby?


• Youth who are custodial parents have the

same rights to participate in foster care after

age 18 as all other youth.

Open Arms, FFA works with young adults ​

who are in the foster care system, this includes:


• 16 year olds who are emancipated and in foster care, 

wards of the court, or in a group home.


• 17 year olds who are in foster homes and want to

continue with extended foster care after they turn 18.


• 18-20 year olds as long as they meet one of the

qualifications of the AB-12 program.

What are the requirements to satisfy or

meet the AB-12 criteria?​


There are five defined criteria, a non-minor dependent need to meet just one out of the five requirements and they will qualify for the program, these include:


1. Being enrolled in high school or equivalent program.


2. Being enrolled in college, community college or vocational education program.


3. Being employed at least 80 hours a month.


4. Participating in a program or activity

designed to remove barriers to employment.



5. Being unable to do one of the above

requirements because of a medical condition.
